Tank-container types

Tank-containers (tankers) are intended to transport liquids, liquefied gases and the whole range of free-flowing products. Tank-container is a container that consists of a framework (frame elements) and cylindrical tank equipped with drain valves and devices for unloading as under gravity as under pressure.

The products recommended for transportation and storage in tank-containers:

  • Alimentary products: alcohol-containing liquids (beer, wines, cognacs, vodka), edible oils, food supplements, concentrated fruit juices, mineral water, milk etc.
  • Industrial products: petroleum and petroleum products, oil and lubricants, liquefied gases, chemicals, paints, salt solutions, fatty acids, granulated and free-flowing solids, liquefied gases etc.

Efficiency

Tank containers are particularly suitable for multimodal transportation with multiple modes of transport facilities (by road, by rail, by water). Since the basic transport module is a 20-foot container (20'x8'x8'6 "), a cargo in tank container can be transported without repacking when changing vehicle as distinct from transportation in rail- and road-tankers. This property of tank containers ensures safety and security of cargo during transportation. Tank containers are also convenient for storage of liquids on equipped areas (container terminals) as well as on non-equipped ones as they do not require a prepared site. Use of tank containers reduces significantly the cost for transportation in compare to transportation of the same amount of liquid in the barrels: tank container holds a product for 60% more while occupying the same space and with the same transportation cost. Tank containers can be used repeatedly, they are designed to be cost-effective and easy in use.

Reliability and quality

A tank of the tank container is made of high-quality stainless steel resistant to the effects of transported products and not impacting on them. The best-known brands of steel are SS 316 TI, 316 L, Z6CNDT 17.12. The frame of the container conforms to ISO, so these containers are reliable in transporting and palletizing. Tank containers are equipped with drain valves Fort Vale or Perolo which protects the cargo from leaking. Containers can be equipped with a layer of insulation and with vapour-heating system to greatly facilitate a process of unloading in winter time.

Safety

Tank containers are manufactured under the supervision of the International Association of Classification Societies: Bureau Veritas, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Det Norske Veritas, SGS, Germanyscher Lloyd, the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. All suggested tank-containers pass through certification under supervision of the Russian Maritime Register of shipping. Availability of the certificate is required for transportation of the tank containers by Russian railways. Upon containers rental our company provides a survey report (on-hire report) of the Russian Register of Shipping about condition of the containers that helps the renter to accurately record a list of possible damages when return of tank container from rental.

Types of tank-containers

Tank containers are divided into several types, each of them in turn signifies a suitability of one or another cargo for transportation:

  • IMO 0 - suitable for transportation of non-hazardous alimentary goods without unloading under pressure (milk, mineral water, vegetable oils, non-concentrated juices). Capacity from 20 to 30,000 liters, a tank wall thickness is 2 mm. Tank container can be equipped with a layer of insulation and a vapour-heating system.
  • IMO 1 - suitable for transportation of all types of liquid chemicals. Capacity from 14 to 30,000 liters, a tank wall thickness is from 4 mm to 7 mm; availability of upper drain depends on the cargo nature. Operating pressure of the tank is from 2.65 to 6 atmospheres. Tank container can be equipped with a layer of insulation and a vapour-heating system as well as an electrical heating system.
  • IMO 2 - suitable for transportation of a wide range of alimentary products having a hazard class and chemical products permitted to be transported with bottom unloading. Capacity from 21 to 30,000 liters, a tank wall thickness is from 3 to 4 mm. Operating pressure of the tanks is from 1.75 to 3 ATM. Tank container can be equipped with a layer of insulation and a vapour-heating system as well as an electrical heating system.
